After winning the Speed Climbing National Championship in Reno, Nevada, my school district, Eanes ISD, and the local media outlets in Austin were very generous about telling my story about winning a National Championship. The win in Reno was a tremendous accomplishment. I still get excited thinking about the final round back in July in Reno.
The reaction from my friends, teachers, neighbors, and peers has been very positive. I’m very appreciative of their support. Due to the first KVUE story about my win, some of my teachers and friends are now calling me “Spiderman”.
The most interesting news story experience was spending a couple of hours with Jake Garcia from KVUE while training locally at Crux. I found out that it takes five to six hours of filming and editing to create a 2.5 minute news story. Jake did a great story telling my story and the challenges I have faced not having a speed wall locally on which to practice.
It took a long time to get to where I am in climbing, and it’s been exciting to get media coverage. I am happy for the opportunity to have gotten the experience.
